Director Carrie Cracknell, primarily a theatre director making her feature debut, framed the film as a corrective to “stuffy” costume drama — Anne narrates her own story with winks to camera in a register critics compared to Fleabag. Whether that framing serves or betrays Austen’s Anne Elliot became the film’s defining argument on release.

What the modernization changes

Beyond the direct-to-camera asides, the script updates Austen’s dialogue into noticeably contemporary idiom, gives Anne a bottle of wine and a bathtub self-pity montage the novel has no equivalent for, and plays several scenes — including her reunion with Wentworth — for comedy rather than the novel’s more restrained ache. Casting against type

Dakota Johnson and Cosmo Jarvis were both cast partly to distance the production from the more traditional, upper-class register other Austen leads have typically carried — Jarvis in particular plays Wentworth with a rougher, more visibly working-class physicality than Ciarán Hinds’s or Rupert Penry-Jones’s more polished naval officers. Henry Golding’s prominent billing as Mr. Elliot led some viewers into the theater expecting him to play Wentworth, a mix-up the marketing did little to correct — a minor but frequently repeated point of confusion that ended up generating its own small wave of social-media discussion around the film’s release.

The 2022 Persuasion arrived amid a broader wave of costume dramas adopting a more knowing, contemporary comic register — a trend also visible in productions like Bridgerton — and its reception illustrates a recurring tension in that approach: audiences drawn to a more accessible, less formal take on period fiction often respond well, while readers who come to an adaptation specifically for its fidelity to a beloved author’s voice tend to feel the modernization as a loss rather than a gain. Where an adaptation lands on that spectrum has become almost as reliable a predictor of its critical reception as the quality of its performances. For viewers deciding among the three screen Persuasions, this version is the clearest fit for anyone who wants a lighter, more overtly comic take rather than a faithful rendering of Austen’s own restrained prose. It succeeds well on those terms, whatever it sacrifices on others. Whether that trade is worth making is likely to remain the defining Persuasion debate for as long as this version stays in circulation alongside its two more traditional predecessors.
